Meta Ads

UTM parameters for Facebook Ads.

In Meta Ads Manager you do not need a separate link for every ad. Paste one parameter string and Meta fills in the values for each ad automatically.

Copy this string into the URL parameters field. You will find it at the ad level, in the Tracking section:

utm_source={{site_source_name}}&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign={{campaign.name}}&utm_term={{adset.name}}&utm_content={{ad.name}}
  • {{campaign.name}}, {{adset.name}}, {{ad.name}}: the names you gave in Ads Manager.
  • {{campaign.id}}, {{adset.id}}, {{ad.id}}: IDs that stay the same when you rename a campaign. Use them when names change often.
  • {{placement}}: where the ad was shown, such as Feed, Stories or Reels.
  • {{site_source_name}}: fb for Facebook, ig for Instagram, msg for Messenger and an for Audience Network.

Do not run the dynamic string through a URL encoder: Meta needs the double braces exactly as written.

Organic Facebook

A UTM structure for publishers with many Pages.

Keep source and medium fixed, and use campaign and content to answer the questions you actually ask: which article, which Page and which placement.

Question you want to answerParameterExample value
Did the visit come from Facebook?utm_sourcefacebook
Was it organic or paid?utm_mediumsocial or paid_social
Which article or offer?utm_campaignbest_budget_phones_2026
Which Facebook Page?utm_termtech_deals_page
Post link, first comment, Reel or Story?utm_contentfirst_comment

Google Analytics 4

How to see Facebook UTM traffic in GA4.

Once your links are tagged, Facebook visits stop being split across several referral sources.

  1. Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition.
  2. Change the main dimension to Session source / medium. Look for facebook / social and, for ads, fb / paid_social and ig / paid_social.
  3. Switch the dimension to Session campaign to compare articles or offers.
  4. Add Session manual term or Session manual ad content as a secondary dimension to compare Pages or placements.

Without UTM tags, GA4 usually reports Facebook visits as referrals from several hostnames, such as m.facebook.com, l.facebook.com and lm.facebook.com. That makes Facebook traffic look smaller and harder to compare.

FAQ

Facebook UTM questions.

What UTM source should I use for Facebook?

Use facebook in lowercase for organic Page posts, and keep the same value everywhere. For Meta Ads, use the dynamic value {{site_source_name}} so Facebook and Instagram clicks are reported separately.

What is fbclid and do I still need UTM tags?

fbclid is a click ID that Facebook adds to outbound links automatically. It does not tell Google Analytics which Page, post or campaign sent the visit. UTM tags do, so keep using them.

Do UTM tags change my Facebook link preview?

No. Facebook builds the preview from the Open Graph tags of the destination page. A tagged link points to the same page, so the title and image stay the same.

Should I add UTM tags to a link in the first comment?

Yes. Use the same source and campaign as the post, and set utm_content to first_comment. You can then compare clicks from the post link and the comment link.

Is this Facebook UTM builder free?

Yes. It runs in your browser and does not need an account.
